About this wine

Character

The nose is remarkably clear and refined: floral notes, fresh red fruit and Mediterranean herbs combine into a refreshing, sensual bouquet. Overall, a Priorat that wins through elegance rather than power — multi-layered, subtle and finely balanced.

Terroir and origin

The vines grow on terraced vineyards of barren slate near Gratallops in the Priorat; the grapes for the Laurel come from the Aubagues and Socarrats vineyards, which were added to the estate at a later stage. Daphne Glorian, born in Switzerland, invested her savings in 1989 — on the advice of Álvaro Palacios and René Barbier — in old Garnacha vines planted across seventeen terraces, and has since played a major role in the rediscovery of this wine region.

Grape variety and vinification

A cuvée dominated by Garnacha, which sets the tone at around 75 percent, complemented by Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ageing lasts 18 months, split between wooden barrels of various sizes, concrete tanks and clay amphorae.

On the palate

Silky texture, the finest tannins, precise definition. The 15% alcohol carries no weight: the wine feels almost lean and light-footed, gliding velvety across the palate while remaining powerful and taut. The finish is remarkably juicy and subtly spiced, its Mediterranean warmth refreshing rather than heavy.

Highlights

The Laurel is the estate's second wine and carries the English translation of Daphne Glorian's first name. Since 2004 she has worked biodynamically, among the first in the Priorat to do so, supported in the vineyard by Ester Nin. Clos i Terrasses enjoys cult status.
