About this wine
Character
A red wine that doesn't hide its power: rich dark berry fruit, firm tannin, and a lively acidity that gives the body freedom of movement and sure footing. Young as it is, it needs time and air to settle into balance.
Terroir and origin
Gratallops in the Priorat, where in 1989 Daphne Glorian invested her savings in old Garnacha vines spread across seventeen terraces. The grapes for the Laurel come from the Aubagues and Socarrats vineyards, added later; the forest-encircled heart of the estate, Escales, 1.7 hectares with vines partly over eighty years old, sits on pure llicorella slate.
Grape variety and vinification
A cuvée made predominantly from Garnacha, complemented by Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ageing takes place in used wood and amphorae, which sit in the cellar alongside barriques, foudres and concrete vats. 14.0% ABV, dry.
On the palate
The nose is deep and, for its youth, generous: lingonberry and cranberry, dried and stewed black cherry, joined by the spice of black tea, delicately smoked duck breast, cocoa bean and a hint of amaretto. On the palate, the dark fruit stays rich while remaining resolutely dry, carried by tightly woven tannin.
Food pairing
Braised shoulder of veal with grilled Brussels sprouts and potato gratin, grilled lamb merguez with mojo rosso and sweet potato fries, or, for a vegetarian option, chestnut spätzle with roasted pumpkin and melted crispy onions.
Special features
Along with René Barbier and Álvaro Palacios, Daphne Glorian ranks among the pioneers of modern Priorat; her cellar produced Clos Erasmus, the first wine from the Priorat to score 100 Parker points. She has worked biodynamically since 2004, supported by Ester Nin. The Laurel bears the English translation of her first name.
