About this wine
Character
A red wine that carries power and coolness at once. The bouquet remains fine and deep, showing a pure fruit expression and floral notes; with air, an earthy minerality emerges, layer by layer.
Terroir and origin
The heart of this wine is the Escales site near Gratallops in Priorat: 1.7 hectares across seventeen terraces, surrounded by forest, with soil of pure Llicorella slate. Some of the vines are over 80 years old. The steep sites are poor, so yields are correspondingly small.
Grape variety and vinification
A cuvée of 70% Garnacha and 30% Syrah. The grapes ferment spontaneously in wooden foudres of varying sizes. The wine then matures for 18 months in new and used barriques, with a small portion in clay amphorae.
On the palate
Depth and minerality carry through. The wine is powerful and energetic, with refined tannin and a velvety-silky texture, yet remains light-footed despite its power. The finish lingers long, juicy, saline and spicy at once, leaving a velvety mouthfeel that resonates for minutes.
Food pairings
With braised leg of lamb with rosemary, pink-roasted beef fillet or a civet of wild pigeon breast.
Special features
In 1989, Swiss-born Daphne Glorian, encouraged by Álvaro Palacios and René Barbier, invested her savings in old Garnacha vines across seventeen terraces near Gratallops. She has farmed biodynamically since 2004, supported by Ester Nin. Production is limited to no more than twelve barriques, with strictly limited allocation. In magnum, the wine matures more slowly than in the 0.75-litre bottle.
