About this wine
Character
A nobly sweet Chenin Blanc that, after decades in the cellar, feels neither tired nor heavy. Sweetness and acidity stand in equal measure, and this tension keeps the 1985 vintage feeling young. At 12.5% vol., this is not a weighty dessert wine but one that thrives on clarity.
Terroir and origin
Clos du Bourg lies in Vouvray on the Loire, on the Première Côte. Gaston Huet secured the site in 1963 and considered it the greatest vineyard in all of Vouvray. Its barren, stony soils lend both mineral tension and generous texture.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Chenin Blanc, known in Vouvray as the grape of moonlight. Whether a site is bottled dry, off-dry, or nobly sweet is decided by the weather, not the winemaker: only once botrytis takes hold of the grapes does a Moelleux emerge. It is aged in neutral casks in the deep rock-cut cellars, where constant temperature carries out the slow maturation.
On the palate
Amber gold in the glass, with warm highlights. Candied lemon peel, ripe quince, dried apricot, and blossom honey, underscored by a cool mineral note. The sweetness is dense yet kept in motion by the vein of acidity, trailing into a long, fine-boned finish.
Food pairing recommendations
With Roquefort and aged Stilton, with the richness of pan-seared foie gras, or with a not-too-sweet dessert such as tarte Tatin.
Distinctive features
Domaine Huet has worked in Vouvray since 1928; Gaston Huet introduced biodynamic farming in the late 1980s, and since 1993 the entire estate has been Demeter-certified. This vintage predates that era. Bottled in Vouvray, 750 ml.
