About this wine

Character

A lusciously sweet Chenin Blanc from a warm, sunny vintage that makes no secret of its concentration: plenty of volume, ripe sweetness and an acidity that keeps the weight in balance. 12.5% ABV.

Terroir and origin

Le Haut-Lieu lies on the Vouvray plateau and is the vineyard where the story of Domaine Huet begins: in 1928 the Huet family purchased the estate along with this site, then five hectares in size. The topsoil of deep brown clay with a little flint and chalk is known here as aubuis, while the yellow tuffeau limestone bedrock lies four metres below.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Chenin Blanc. The estate only bottles a Moelleux 1ère Trie in exceptional years, since it is the weather, not the winemaker, that decides whether botrytis develops; only the ripest berries are picked for it. The 2003 was aged in the estate's deep rock-cut cellars, at a constant temperature and in neutral vessels.

On the palate

The nose offers volume from the very first sniff: candied oranges and orange peel, grapefruit, quince, dates and figs, alongside ginger, plenty of mocha, salted caramel and cardamom. On the palate the wine feels even denser than on the nose, almost syrupy in texture, with white nougat and caramel alongside the fruit. Yet it never turns cloying, staying fresh and juicy throughout.

Food pairings

With short ribs with Cajun rub on grilled romaine lettuce with papaya, with lamb ragout with lentils, pears and sage, and for dessert with pistachio macaron cake with elderflower apricots.

Highlights

Gaston Huet introduced biodynamics in the late 1980s, and the estate has been Demeter-certified since 1993. This 2003 was released for sale twenty years after the vintage, straight from the estate's treasure cellar.
