About this wine

Character

The Le Haut Lieu Moelleux 1ère Trie 2018 is a nobly sweet Chenin Blanc from Vouvray that never flaunts its sweetness: the fruit lies open and inviting, kept in motion by bright acidity. At 12.5% ABV, it remains buoyant and light-footed.

Terroir and origin

In 1928, the Huet family fell in love with a five-hectare plot of vines during a visit to Vouvray and bought it that same year. Le Haut-Lieu is thus the origin of the Domaine, nine hectares on the Première Côte above the Vouvray plateau. The deep, chalky clay lends the wines fruitiness and freshness.

Grape variety and vinification

Chenin Blanc, referred to here as the grape of the moonlight. The Moelleux 1ère Trie is made only in exceptional years: whether botrytis appears is decided by the weather, not the winemaker. It is aged in neutral vessels in the deep rock cellars, which maintain a constant temperature. Since 2020, cellar master Benjamin Joliveau, a Vouvray native, has been responsible for the wines.

On the palate

Fine and subtle: alongside the elegant sweetness there is plenty of citrus and fresh apple, followed by a finely spiced finish that awakens the palate. The nose offers apple compote, quince jelly, white peach purée and ripe pear, along with anise, ginger, acacia blossom, chamomile, honeysuckle, and green hints of nettle and savory. Those opening it now should decant it and serve it in a large glass, not too chilled.

Food pairing suggestions

Yellow lentils with dates, honey and jalapeño chillies, wild spinach on grilled baguette with béchamel and ham, or to finish, wild strawberries with peach and Vouvray-mint jelly.

Special features

Gaston Huet introduced biodynamic practices back in the late 1980s, and the entire estate has been Demeter-certified since 1993. The 1ère Trie remains the exception in the range, and this vintage will keep gaining over the coming years.
