About this wine
Character
A dry Chenin Blanc from Vouvray that, after more than a decade of bottle age, remains taut and mineral. Its drive comes from the arc of acidity and the salinity of the soil, not from an abundance of fruit.
Terroir and origin
The Le Mont vineyard lies on the Première Côte, directly above the historic tuffeau cellars of Domaine Huet. Little clay, much stone, plus limestone: soils that produce intensely mineral wines and, with age, lend them length and finesse. Gaston Huet secured the parcel in 1957.
Grape variety and vinification
Chenin Blanc, called the grape of moonlight in Vouvray. The estate has farmed biodynamically since the late 1980s and has been Demeter-certified in its entirety since 1993. Whether a vintage turns out dry, off-dry or sweet is decided by the weather; 2009 produced the Sec at 13.5% vol. It is aged in neutral vessels in the estate's deep rock-cut cellars, where the temperature remains constant.
On the palate
Taut, with saline minerality and fresh yellow fruit, more its essence than a fruit basket, underpinned by a subtly bitter edge and fine extract sweetness. The arc of acidity stretches wide and carries the wine into a fruity, smoky finish. On the nose, ripe yellow fruit, citrus, orange blossom water, young sage, ginger, small pears and a stony, smoky note.
Food pairings
Sweet potato purée with ginger, smoked mackerel with gooseberry confit and fennel seed, or prawns with leek and root vegetables in a ginger and kaffir lime leaf broth.
Special features
Magnum of 1500 ml, a format well suited to this Chenin Blanc's longevity. The wines of Domaine Huet are built to endure for decades.
