About this wine
Character
Lo Món is the flagship wine of Trossos del Priorat, grown from old Grenache and Carignan vines. Power and freshness sit closely together here: the wine feels cool and dark, never heavy and never over-concentrated. In the glass, a deep, glowing cherry red with violet highlights.
Terroir and origin
The Vives family's estate was founded in 2004 in Gratallops, at the heart of Priorat. The 21 hectares of organically farmed vines are spread across eight parcels, each with its own microclimate. Llicorella slate crumbles into glittering flakes at the touch, offers barely any nutrients, and forces the roots deep into the soil; by day it stores heat that it returns to the vines at night.
Grape variety and vinification
Grenache and Carignan, the classic varieties of Priorat, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon for depth and structure. Winemaker Eva Escudé puts the grape ahead of the cellar: "The most important thing is to have excellent grapes." The cellar, designed by Lluís Escarmís, makes use of the site's natural slope, moving the grapes by gravity rather than pumping them.
On the palate
Black olive, pepper and juniper meet rosemary and thyme, alongside plenty of plum, blackberry and dark cherry; leather, musk, violet and chocolate add animal and dark accents. The slate minerality stays composed, the acidity kicks in right away and makes the wine feel lighter than its concentration would suggest. Fine-grained tannin gives it structure.
Food pairings
With grilled roast beef with Mediterranean roasted vegetables, blackberry and olives, with braised beef cheeks with plum compote and gnocchi, or vegetarian with bread dumplings with chanterelle ragout and hazelnuts.
