About this wine
Character
A mature red wine, far removed from primary fruit: dark, calm, with inner depth. The nose shows blackberry, elderberry and sweet and sour cherry over earthy notes of beetroot, undergrowth and forest floor, joined by an ethereal line of pine needles, juniper, licorice, rosemary and eucalyptus. The spice remains precisely defined, carried by pepper.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow around Gratallops in the Priorat, across 21 hectares farmed organically and divided into eight parcels, each with its own microclimate. The soil is Llicorella, the region's characteristic slate, which crumbles into glittering flakes to the touch. It yields few nutrients, storing the day's heat to release it to the vines at night; the roots must reach deep to find water.
Grape variety and vinification
A blend of Grenache, Carignan and Cabernet Sauvignon; the Lo Món is the estate's flagship wine, made from old Grenache and Carignan vines. For winemaker Eva Escudé, it is the quality of the grape that matters, not the hand in the cellar. Lluís Escarmís's cellar makes use of the terrain's natural slope, moving the grapes by gravity. A hint of coconut points to the oak ageing, integrated and never overt.
On the palate
Dense and full, the structure is immediately present. The tannin glides across the palate, coating it, bringing fine bitter notes that lend profile and length while keeping the fruit in motion. Despite its intensity, the wine feels finely etched; on the finish, freshness comes forward, leaving a lively close.
Food pairing recommendations
With braised lamb shank, venison goulash with juniper or braised beef cheeks.
