About this wine
Character
A fragrant, youthfully built Spätburgunder with a cool stature and Burgundian finesse evident on the nose already. In the glass, muted garnet red with violet reflections, alongside graphite and earthy notes next to rose, ivy and elderflower.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the Alter Maustal in Sulzfeld, Franconia. The Maustal is a VDP.Grosse Lage, a steep south-facing slope directly on the Main river, with soil of lower shell limestone. This limestone draws the cool, mineral line that holds fruit and acidity together.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir from vines roughly 25 years old. Cellar master Philipp Luckert consistently relies on spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts; at Zehnthof the wines mature in traditional large oak casks from the Spessart forest, unfiltered and with minimal sulphur. 13.0% vol., vinified dry.
On the palate
Dancing and vibrant, the fruit still youthful: sour cherry, wild raspberry, redcurrant and pomegranate. The acidity is fresh and assertive, the tannin structure fine-grained and piquant. The long finish points to considerable ageing potential; anyone drinking the 2020 now should decant it.
Food pairings
With crispy guinea fowl served with blood sausage praline, beetroot and chard, with monkfish medallions with smoked bacon on red wine risotto, and in a vegetarian version with radishes and raspberries with fresh cheese on pumpernickel crumb.
Special features
The Zehnthof Luckert winery in Sulzfeld was named Winery of the Year 2025 by VINUM and has held five stars in the Eichelmann guide continuously since 2016. The family has been a VDP member since 1955, working out of the prince-bishop's Zehnthof dating from 1558.
