About this wine

Character

The Mâcon-Igé Climat "En Chanelet" AOC 2024 is a Chardonnay from a single plot in the village of Igé in Burgundy, built to be juicy and compact yet playful. In the glass, it shows an intense, medium golden yellow.

Terroir and origin

The plot lies within the village of Igé itself, at 230 metres of altitude and facing west, on highly fertile limestone. The vines have stood there for 40 to 80 years and root correspondingly deep.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Chardonnay, harvested on 17 September 2024. Fermentation takes place 100 percent spontaneously in barrique, with minimal sulphuring. Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret founded Bret Brothers in 2001 to vinify grapes from beyond the family's own vineyards to their own standards, working exclusively with growers who practise organic or biodynamic viticulture. The brothers' family estate is Domaine La Soufrandière in Pouilly-Vinzelles.

On the palate

The nose offers ripe pear, apricot and orange zest, alongside freshly churned butter, vanilla, praline crunch, leather and milky coffee, layered over delicate floral notes that lend the wine a feminine, beguiling character. The attack is juicy and compact, the mid-palate playful and rich in finesse. A saline, mineral streak runs across the palate at full intensity, pointing to considerable ageing potential. Given sufficient aeration, though, it already drinks with real pleasure.

Food pairings

Its strength lies with bold sauces and richly spiced dishes.

Special features

2706 bottles of this wine were produced. Old vines, a west-facing exposure and spontaneous fermentation in barrique shape it more than any intervention in the cellar.
