About this wine
Character
The Lieben Aich DOC 2022 is a dry-styled Sauvignon Blanc from Caldaro, drawing its tension from acidity and minerality rather than tropical fruit. The magnum format plays to its ageing potential.
Terroir and origin
Manincor lies on the road to Lake Caldaro in South Tyrol; the estate building, with its distinctive tower, has stood there for over 400 years. The estate comprises 50 hectares of vineyards, embedded within a farmed unit of 463 hectares of orchards, vines, forest and meadows. Chickens, sheep and bees live alongside the vines, and herbal teas replace synthetic sprays.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Sauvignon Blanc. Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg has run the estate since 1991; biodynamic farming has been practised since 2005, with estate director Helmuth Zozin at his side since 2008. Fermentation happens spontaneously with the wine's natural yeasts. The cellar is built into the slope and works by gravity: no pumps, constant temperatures in the cool rock.
On the palate
Straw yellow with greenish reflections. On the nose, flint, gooseberry, fresh meadow herbs and lemon zest. The wine flows lean and juicy, the acidity stays taut, the finish mineral and long. 13.0% vol.
Food pairings
Pan-fried char and turbot with herb butter, risotto with wild herbs, veal carpaccio.
Special features
Magnum, 1500 ml. Biodynamic farming since 2005, with the first fully biodynamic vintage following in 2006. Two-thirds of the white wines undergo spontaneous fermentation, and one hundred percent of the reds.
