About this wine
Character
The Tannenberg DOC 2023 is the Sauvignon Blanc from Manincor's Herz line in Kaltern, a single-vineyard wine with a crisp, focused nature. Aromatically precise, herb-spiced and threaded with a distinct saline vein, it stays clearly defined despite its fully ripe fruit.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on the Terlano site Lieben Aich, a southwest-facing slope at 300 metres above sea level. The soil consists of sandy loam over weathered porphyry. The estate is based in Kaltern, where Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg has worked since 1991 and Helmuth Zozin has overseen cellar work as estate director since 2008.
Grape variety and winemaking
Single-varietal Sauvignon Blanc. The destemmed grapes spend twelve hours on the skins before pressing. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously in wood, after which the wine matures for nine months on fine lees. Bottled in magnum at 1500 ml, 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
Pale straw yellow with green highlights. On the nose, fully ripe yellow fruit with a tropical touch, along with passion fruit leaf, star fruit and freshly cut grass, framed by tart grapefruit zest and seasoned with chervil, borage and lemon balm. The entry is fruity-tart, with juicy extract and supple phenolics, cool and seamless. Grapefruit, lemon balm and ground elder carry through, and fresh acidity draws the wine out to a salty-tart finish.
Special features
Manincor has farmed its 50 hectares in Kaltern biodynamically since 2005, with the first fully biodynamic vintage in 2006. Chickens, sheep and bees are part of the estate, and herbal teas replace synthetic sprays. The cellar is built into the slope and works by gravity rather than pumps, at constant temperatures within the cool rock.
