About this wine
Character
The Josèphine rouge Vino Liquoroso 2019 is a Sicilian sweet wine made from Pignatello, at 18.0 % vol., declared off-dry and bottled in a 500 ml bottle. Sweetness and freshness stand in balance, held together by spice.
Terroir and origin
Sicily, Contrada Fornara Samperi near Marsala. It was there that Marco de Bartoli returned to the family estate after ten years as a racing driver, realising his vision of Sicilian wine in 1978: old solera casks, the reconstructed family cellar, no additions. Today the family farms 30 hectares organically.
Grape variety and vinification
Pignatello. 3,500 vines per hectare, trained in the traditional alberello or in guyot, harvested exclusively by hand, fermented with indigenous yeasts.
On the palate
On the nose, red fruits, nougat, raisins and forest honey, with sweet spices. On the palate the wine remains red-fruited, sweet yet refreshing at the same time; the fruit structure feels animating, the finish lingers long.
Food pairings
Arugula salad with oranges, pomegranate, candied walnuts and feta. Sautéed liver with pear and cranberries. To finish, a dessert with nougat and raspberries macerated in Marsala.
Special features
Between 1995 and 2000 the winery remained closed: the authorities took the view that a wine with 18 percent alcohol could not be classified as wine. The legacy is carried on today by Renato, Sebastiano and Giuseppina.
