About this wine
Character
The wine shows both warm and cool notes on the nose, precisely defined: red berries, blackberries, sweet and sour cherries, undergrowth and warm forest floor, with a hint of tawny port and sweet spices. In the glass, a deep, intense cherry red of medium transparency.
Terroir and origin
The name refers to two differently oriented parcels on the mid-slope, mainly from La Combe du Pré, together with Les Echezeaux, the highest-lying climat of Marsannay. The soil is Ostrea acuminata marl, a marly limestone formed from countless small oyster fossils bound in a fine, clay-rich matrix. The vines were planted in 1980, and viticulture is organic, certified since 2019, partly biodynamic.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, 85 percent destemmed and fermented after nearly a week of cold maceration in tanks, using exclusively native yeasts. Ageing lasted 12 to 16 months in 228-litre oak barrels, mostly used, with around 20 percent new oak. No fining, no enzymes, at most light filtration, and little to no sulphur.
On the palate
Juicy and airy, the tannins supple, the acidity round yet present. Darker in berry character than on the nose, with a ripe, delicious impression. Galeyrand's 2023 vintage comes across as consistently supple and open.
Special features
Jérôme Galeyrand worked in the cheese trade for eight years before buying his first parcel of 0.05 hectares in 2002. Today the domaine in Saint-Philibert covers 5.25 hectares, with production of around 2000 cases. In 2020 he received a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
