About this wine
Character
The Marsannay "La Combe du Pré" 2020 is a Pinot Noir that carries both energy and elegance. In the glass, a bright, deep ruby red; on the nose, an intense scent of juicy young cherries, followed by wood and caramel, whose warm note offsets the robustly fresh base tone.
Terroir and origin
The climat La Combe du Pré covers 4.3 hectares, sits at 300 metres altitude below the Combe du Pré woods, and faces north. It is considered one of the coolest sites in the commune. Of this lieu-dit, 3.55 hectares are planted for red wine, the rest reserved for rosé. Jérôme Galeyrand owns 0.5 hectares here, farmed organically, partly biodynamically, and very labour-intensive.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, largely destemmed and fermented in tank, using exclusively native yeasts. Ageing lasted twelve months in used 228-litre oak barrels, with the proportion of new oak kept to 15 to 20 percent. No fining, no enzymes, light filtration only where necessary, and at most very low doses of sulphur.
On the palate
Juicy, powerful and cool, carried by fresh, almost explosive acidity that suits this generous vintage. The dark, youthful fruit remains juicy, the tannin fine and silky. Robustness and elegance sit side by side.
Food pairing suggestions
Beef ribs with Roquefort sauce, skrei cod with mustard sauce, fried flower sprouts and roast potatoes, and French country bread with ham, eggs Benedict, braised mushrooms and hollandaise sauce.
Special features
Jérôme Galeyrand arrived in Burgundy without a winemaking family behind him, buying his first parcel of 0.05 hectares in 2002 and now farming 5.25 hectares in the Côte de Nuits. In 2020 he was awarded a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France.
