About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir whose impact comes not from power but from fragrance and texture. Jérôme Galeyrand's Marsannay wines combine approachability with complexity: they speak quietly yet remain present in the glass.
Terroir and origin
Marsannay forms the northern gateway to the Côte de Nuits and is the only Burgundy appellation authorised for red, white and rosé. Jérôme Galeyrand arrived in Burgundy without a winemaking family behind him and bought his first 0.05-hectare parcel in 2002. Today the domaine, based in Saint-Philibert, farms 5.25 hectares in the Côte de Nuits, with the barrel cellar located in Gevrey-Chambertin.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, harvested by Jérôme Galeyrand and a group of well-trained friends. The work is done with fresh grape juice, without technological or oenological procedures: no industrial yeasts, no fining agents, no enzymes, only minimal sulphur. Depending on the cuvée and vintage, he either fully destems or ferments whole bunches. Ageing lasts 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, with a low proportion of new wood. 70 percent of the vineyards are farmed organically, 30 percent according to sustainable principles; pesticides are excluded and the soils are ploughed mechanically.
On the palate
On the nose, dark cherry and wild strawberry, followed by spice notes and undergrowth. Silky texture, vibrant freshness, fine-grained tannins, a precise finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees.
Food pairing recommendations
With duck breast with cherries, coq au vin or roast chicken, as well as with chanterelle mushrooms with thyme or a mild soft cheese.
Special features
In 2020, Jérôme Galeyrand received a star in the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France. Production remains small: depending on the vintage, around 2,000 cases, or roughly 24,000 bottles.
