About this wine
Character
The Mason di Mason DOC 2020 is a dry Pinot Noir from Kaltern in South Tyrol at 13.5% vol. Manincor ferments all its red wines one hundred percent spontaneously, using the yeasts native to each vintage and as little intervention as possible. The wine is thus the result of a way of working that lets the vintage speak for itself.
Terroir and origin
The estate lies in Kaltern, at St. Josef am See, on the road that leads to Lake Kaltern. The historic estate building, with its distinctive tower, has stood here for over 400 years. The 50 hectares of vines are part of a 463-hectare estate comprising orchards, vineyards, forest and meadows, managed as a single biodynamic unit. Chickens, sheep and bees are part of it, and herbal teas replace synthetic sprays.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir from the 2020 vintage, dry. Fermentation begins spontaneously with natural yeasts. The cellar is built into the slope and works by gravity: no pumps, with constant temperatures thanks to the cool rock. Bottling takes place on the estate itself.
Distinctive features
Manincor means "hand on heart". Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg, a qualified oenologist, took over the estate from his uncle in 1991, then a classic mixed farm, and ended the practice of delivering grapes to the cooperative in order to bottle his own wines under his own name. The estate has been farmed biodynamically since 2005, with the first fully biodynamic vintage in 2006. Estate director Helmuth Zozin, in post since 2008 and previously cellar master for twenty years at the Kellerei Kaltern cooperative, thinks in terms of the whole, from pruning right through to bottling.
