About this wine
Character
A multi-layered Pinot Nero with distinctive concentration and a cool base tone. Velvety, distinctive, with good tension and a slightly austere finish on the long close. In the glass, a transparent, powerful ruby red with a subtly lightening rim.
Terroir and origin
Manincor is located in Caldaro, its estate building with the striking tower has stood on the Brenner road for over 400 years. The estate comprises 50 hectares of vines, embedded in 463 hectares of vineyards, orchards, forest and meadows, all managed as a single unit according to Demeter principles. Chickens, sheep and bees are part of the estate, and herbal teas replace synthetic sprays.
Grape variety and vinification
A single-varietal Pinot Noir, known as Blauburgunder in South Tyrol. All of the estate's red wines ferment spontaneously with natural yeasts. The cellar is built into the slope and uses gravity rather than pumps, with the cool rock keeping temperatures constant. Michael Graf Goëss-Enzenberg switched the estate to biodynamic work in 2005, and estate director Helmuth Zozin thinks in connections, from pruning through to bottling.
On the palate
On the nose, ripe wild raspberries, blackberries and tart cranberries, alongside fine woody spice, liquorice, allspice and cloves, floral framed by rose petals and violets. The opening is precise and juicy, with fine extract and clearly defined fruit. The structure is dense, the tannins smooth and polished, giving grip and contour. The acidity keeps the wine lively and focused. With air, more dark fruit, herbal spice and a subtle, cool minerality emerge.
Food pairing recommendations
With saddle of venison and duck breast with cranberries, with mushroom risotto or braised leg of lamb with herbs. Milky hard cheese and salmon trout also pair well.
Special features
Biodynamic work since 2005, entire range Demeter-certified since 2009. 13.0% vol., dry.
