About this wine
Character
A pure, uncompromising Grosses Gewächs from Franconia: cool, taut and bone-dry at 13.0% vol., pale straw yellow in colour. The wine relies on tension rather than fullness, yet still comes across as charming, since beneath its polished surface lie a subtle richness and a floral note.
Terroir and origin
The Maustal lies south of Sulzfeld am Main, four hectares facing south and south-east. The steep site is shaped by sparse, skeletal Upper Muschelkalk limestone, with vines planted 36 to 42 years ago. The Zehnthof Luckert estate works out of the prince-bishop's Zehnthof dating from 1558 and has belonged to the VDP since 1955.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, hand-harvested and destemmed, with a somewhat extended skin contact and spontaneous fermentation. Cellar master Philipp Luckert, trained under Paul Fürst in Bürgstadt, relies consistently on natural yeasts. The wine is aged in a classic large double-barrel of Spessart oak.
On the palate
On the nose, taut notes of ash, tobacco, stone and petrichor, along with herbs, nuts, mustard seed and grapefruit zest; with air and warmth, juicy stone fruit notes emerge. On the palate the cool impression remains, underlined by vibrant acidity and minerality: taut, saline and citrusy, carried by a fine creaminess.
Food pairings
Monkfish with plain rice and saffron-limequat beurre blanc, gin-cured salmon with cauliflower-horseradish purée, or ravioli with Amalfi lemons, pine nuts and ricotta.
Special features
The Maustal is classified as a VDP.Grosse Lage. The estate's wines age unfiltered and with minimal sulphur; VINUM named the estate Winery of the Year in 2025, and Eichelmann has consistently awarded it five stars since 2016.
