About this wine

Character

A spicy, distinctive red wine that captures the aromas of the Corsican maquis: ripe red fruit, myrtle, immortelle and wild lavender over a mineral structure. The 14.5% Vol. remains well integrated, with freshness and tension defining the wine. Its name goes back to an ancestor of the Abbatucci family.

Terroir and origin

Domaine Abbatucci lies at 150 metres above sea level in the Taravo valley, where granitic sandy soils with a natural north and north-east exposure shape the twenty hectares of vineyard. Jean-Charles Abbatucci, who took over the estate in 1992, has farmed it biodynamically since 2000: ploughing with horses instead of tractors, a flock of sheep for cover cropping and fertilisation, and preparations made from medicinal herbs and minerals.

Grape variety and vinification

A blend of old red varieties, including Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu and Aléaticu. They come from the ampelographic collection that Antoine Abbatucci established in the 1960s as president of the Corsican chamber of agriculture, to preserve eighteen indigenous varieties from extinction. The grapes are hand-harvested into small crates, followed by careful selection in the cellar.

On the palate

Powerful and layered, with spicy myrtle and dark berries, soft tannins and a mineral vein that carries this dry wine through to a long, spicy finish. Subtle oak notes accompany the fruit.

Special features

Demeter-certified since 2005, the label carries the Demeter logo. Abbatucci regenerates old vines using the chip-budding technique, which allows varieties to be changed without uprooting and preserves the already established root structure.
