About this wine
Character
Morei means dark in Trentino dialect, and the wine lives up to its name: dark violet in the glass, dark fruit on the nose, with a tannin that feels like sandpaper. Dry, 12.5% vol., and despite its density, cool and lively.
Terroir and origin
The Morei site lies in the Campo Rotaliano near Mezzolombardo, 2.5 hectares on stony alluvial soil. The valley floor is wedged between three-thousand-metre peaks; over millennia the Noce river has deposited limestone, porphyry and gneiss here. By day the rock walls reflect the sun's heat, by night cool mountain air flows through the valley.
Grape variety and vinification
Teroldego, a single-varietal wine. Elisabetta Foradori took over the estate in 1984 and revived the nearly extinct grape variety through mass selection, together with the University of Milan and the San Michele research centre. Since 2013 her son Emilio has led the winemaking. The Morei ages for eight months in Spanish clay amphorae, the tinajas, which let the wine and must breathe.
On the palate
The nose brings elderberry, sour cherry and just-ripe blackberry, alongside cassis, date and a hint of damp clay. Juicy, cool and vividly mineral, with good drive; the slightly tart dark fruit notes conceal a sweet core. The wine is still utterly young and benefits from time in the decanter.
Food pairing suggestions
Roast beef with elderberry-onion reduction, venison fillet with blackberries, redcurrants, goat's milk ricotta and Sichuan pepper or pasta with fresh cheese, figs and walnuts.
Highlights
Clay instead of barrique: oak used to overshadow the Teroldego, while the amphora brings fruit and minerality to the fore. The estate farms 28 hectares according to Demeter principles, 80 percent of it Teroldego; the Demeter logo appears on the label. The magnum holds 1500 ml.
