About this wine
Character
A Premier Cru of cool precision: clearly delineated, finely structured, built for length and clarity. The Magnum format slows the wine's evolution, giving the 2017 vintage more time to develop in the cellar.
Terroir and origin
Morey-Saint-Denis lies in the Côte de Nuits, where the Lignier family has been growing Pinot Noir since the 1880s. Hubert Lignier took over the estate in 1959 and, in 1973, began bottling his wines himself rather than selling them in bulk. Today, Laurent Lignier runs the domaine as the fifth generation.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, vinified dry, 13.0% vol. Fermentation begins with long, cold macerations; the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. Laurent Lignier deliberately limits new oak and spreads it across four coopers, so that no single barrel dominates the wine's character. The cellar, acquired in 2008, relies solely on gravity flow — no pump is used from crushing through to bottling. The vineyard has been farmed without synthetic products since 2007.
On the palate
Ruby red with cherry-red hues. On the nose, ripe cherry, raspberry and strawberry, alongside violet, undergrowth and fine spice notes. The wine stays silky, the fruit concentrated, the tannin fine-grained; a lively acidity carries it into a long, clear finish.
Food pairings
Roasted duck breast with cherry sauce and rosé-cooked veal fillet pair as well as coq au vin or braised rabbit with mushrooms. To finish, aged Époisses or Langres.
Special features
Old vines, as indicated by the "Vieilles Vignes" designation, yielding correspondingly low quantities. Bottled in Morey-Saint-Denis by Domaine Hubert Lignier, in a 1500 ml Magnum.
