About this wine

Character

A straight, coolly drawn Pinot Noir whose density comes from the age of the vines. At its core are cherry and black cherry, alongside violet and an earthy note of undergrowth. The tannin is fine-grained, the finish long and clear.

Terroir and origin

Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits, where the Lignier family has farmed Pinot Noir since the 1880s. Jacques Lignier bought plots at the time that had been devalued by phylloxera; his son Jules patiently replanted them, and ownership passed through Henri to Hubert Lignier, who took over management in 1959. In 1973, in the middle of a sales crisis, Hubert began bottling the wines himself rather than selling them off as bulk wine. Today Laurent Lignier runs the estate, the fifth generation.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir. Since 2007 the vineyards have been farmed without synthetic products, and the soils are ploughed. Long, cool macerations precede fermentation, and the proportion of whole clusters has grown over the years. In the cellar built in 2008, the wine moves solely by gravity, from the must to bottling, without a pump. New oak is deliberately kept modest and comes from four different coopers, so that no single barrel sets the tone.

On the palate

Dry, powerful at 14.5% vol., without losing its drive. The acidity holds up the dark fruit, the fine tannin gives it contour rather than weight.

Distinctive features

The estate's vines descend from a selection that Henri Lignier propagated vine by vine in the 1960s, from rows planted in 1955 in the Monts Luisants climat. Old vines here are prone to millerandage and bear small, concentrated berries.
