About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir of cool precision, sharply drawn and built for length. The 2023 shows the house style at village scale: clear red fruit, tension and a tannin that carries rather than presses. At 14.0% vol., it has substance while remaining dry and linear.

Terroir and origin

Morey-Saint-Denis in the Côte de Nuits. It began in the 1880s with Jacques Lignier, who bought plots devalued by phylloxera; his son Jules patiently replanted them. Hubert Lignier took over in 1959 and, from 1973, began bottling the wine himself rather than selling it in bulk to négociants. Today Laurent Lignier runs the estate in its fifth generation.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir. Since 2007 the estate has worked without synthetic inputs in the vineyards. Vinification begins with long, cool macerations, with the proportion of whole clusters having grown over the years. The Morey cellar, occupied since 2008, operates without a pump: from crush to bottling, gravity alone moves the wine. New oak is deliberately kept in check and spread across four coopers so that no single barrel dominates.

On the palate

Silky texture, carried by vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannin. Dark cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry lead, followed by violet, damp forest floor and clove. The finish stays clear and long.

Food pairings

Boeuf bourguignon, roast partridge or quail, game ragout. With cheese: Époisses or Comté.

Distinctive features

The estate's plant material traces back to twenty-seven rows planted by Henri Lignier in 1955: in the 1960s he used mass selection from their wood to replant the other plots, vine by vine.
