About this wine
Character
Clear, juicy fruit, a fine austerity and a taut, saline line. The wine is slender yet deep, with silky tannin and a long mineral pull. Little show, plenty of provenance: a red wine for the table that gains complexity with age.
Terroir and origin
The "En la rue de Vergy" site lies in the northern part of Morey-Saint-Denis. From Marsannay-la-Côte, Domaine Bruno Clair farms 27 hectares across eight villages of the Côte d'Or and bottles 32 appellations. Bruno Clair founded the estate in 1986 with seven hectares inherited from Domaine Clair-Daü, which was dissolved in 1985. Cover crops and the renunciation of herbicides have long been standard practice in the vineyards.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Pinot Noir. In the cellar, the rule is: as much as necessary, as little as possible. Fermentation starts spontaneously, extraction stays measured, and 20 to 50 percent whole clusters go into the fermentation vat. Ageing lasts 18 to 20 months in barriques, with new oak between 20 and 50 percent. The wine is clarified over time, bottled without cosmetic intervention. 13.0% ABV, dry.
On the palate
Bright ruby red with violet highlights. On the nose, cherry and raspberry, violet, alongside fine spice and damp forest floor. Medium body, velvety tannin, juicy fruit and mineral freshness, the finish long and calm.
Food pairings
Coq au vin, roast duck breast with cherry sauce or veal medallions with morel sauce. For cheese, mature Époisses or Comté.
Special features
Since 2010, son Edouard has worked at the estate, joined in 2018 by Margaux and Arthur: Edouard oversees the vineyard and vinification, Arthur the cellar ageing, Margaux shipping and logistics. The sixth generation is carefully raising the share of whole clusters and lowering sulphur use.
