About this wine
Character
This dry Weissburgunder from Baden favours restraint. The primary fruit has given way to the aromas of élevage, the wine remains quiet and balanced, speaking of the soils, of the long ageing on full lees, and of the time it was given. With more oxygen, the oak becomes noticeable, toasty notes join in and add further complexity. A wine for the big glasses.
Terroir and origin
Oberbergener Pulverbuck is one of the top vineyard sites in the Kaiserstuhl, rising to around 400 metres and running right up to the forest's edge. The steep, south-facing slopes carry loess and weathered limestone soils with a high proportion of active limestone. This combination creates a cool microclimate that shapes the wine's saline, chalky minerality.
Grape variety and vinification
100 percent Weissburgunder from selective hand harvest, spontaneously fermented. Ageing lasts around 12 months in large, old oak foudres, followed by around 6 months in stainless steel tank on full lees before bottling. 13.0% ABV.
On the palate
The restraint continues on entry. Without brash fruit, Pulverbuck is a structural Weissburgunder that sets a benchmark for the variety. The fruit shows itself only in the extract, the acidity plays a nonchalant supporting role, and aromatically medium-bodied, it pulses with a spicy, warm bass note on the mid-palate. Flanked by phenolic structure, it is bone dry, generous and yet cleanly contoured, flowing calmly into a comfortingly warm finish.
Distinctive features
This wine carries the VDP Erste Lage classification. The Franz Keller winery has worked in the Kaiserstuhl since 1892; since 2016 it has been led by Friedrich Keller in the fourth generation, gradually converting to organic farming with biodynamic elements. The winery building, constructed into the hillside in terraces in 2013, allows for gentle, gravity-flow winemaking.
