About this wine

Character

A Grosses Gewächs from sole ownership: the Wachenheimer Odinstal monopole vineyard belongs entirely to the estate, five hectares in a hollow enclosed by forest, 350 metres above the Rhine valley. The 2022 remains at 12.5% Vol. and is vinified dry, a Pinot Blanc built on precision rather than fullness. In the 3000 ml double magnum it evolves especially slowly in the cellar.

Terroir and origin

The faults of the Rhine Rift have laid four rock types side by side here within a tight space: basalt from the nearby Pechsteinkopf, shell limestone, Keuper marl and yellow variegated sandstone. Ten hectares of mixed forest enclose the vineyard, there are no winegrowing neighbours, so no spray drift occurs. At 350 metres, the grapes ripen around 20 days later than in the valley, which gives the wines freshness and tension.

Grape variety and vinification

Weissburgunder, internationally known as Pinot Blanc, benefits at Odinstal from the cool nights of the elevated site. Estate manager Andreas Schumann follows a principle of non-intervention in the cellar: spontaneous fermentation without temperature control, extended lees ageing, minimal use of sulphur. The wines become as dry as they want to be.

On the palate

In the glass, pale golden yellow with greenish reflections; on the nose, ripe pear and white peach, along with floral notes, almond and a hint of brioche. The palate opens dry and creamy, the acidity stays lively, and citrus freshness carries through to a long, mineral-driven finish.

Highlights

Odinstal has been Demeter-certified since 2013 and is run as a closed organism: five suckler cows graze among the vines, and bees kept by beekeeper Andreas Kramer pollinate the meadows. The VDP estate notes the elevation of 350 N.N. on many labels, and the Demeter logo also appears on the bottle.
