About this wine
Character
A bone-dry Riesling that reveals little in its youth and makes no concessions. It drinks clear and without aromatic embellishment, firmly built and still closed. Whoever opens it now should decant it in good time; whoever waits will be rewarded more richly.
Terroir and origin
The Kastanienbusch rises to as much as 320 metres above sea level and is the highest VDP-classified vineyard in the Palatinate; the chestnut trees surrounding it gave it its name. Rebholz's share is limited to a basin with a steep south-facing slope. There the vines root in Rotliegend, loose deposits of granite, schist and melaphyre, rock from the Permian period roughly 280 million years old.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Riesling, hand-harvested. The grapes were destemmed, spent 24 hours on the skins and fermented in steel. 12.5% vol., fully fermented dry. The estate's vineyards in Siebeldingen are farmed biodynamically.
On the palate
The wine opens with a pleasant warmth, then turns firm and fleshy. Lemon and grapefruit zest stand alongside herbs and red Kampot pepper, carried by a stimulating phenolic grip with lively astringency. The youthful acidity pulls the wine vertically long and keeps it linear right through to its tart, cool finish.
Food pairings
Black olive and citrus risotto with a light caper sauce, cod fish fingers with lime-jalapeño emulsion or flank steak with grilled vintage sardine.
Special features
Experience shows that the Kastanienbusch takes a very long time to open up aromatically. The 1500ml magnum is bottled precisely for that patience.
