About this wine

Character

Sparkling golden yellow. On the nose, the 2022 still appears pronounced and reserved, and needs air. A day after opening, apple, citrus and vineyard peach emerge, together with earth, smoke, bark, wild herbs and pepper.

Terroir and origin

The Kastanienbusch lies west of Birkweiler in a basin formed by the Taschberg, the Kleiner and Hoher Berg, and the Kastanienbusch itself, which keeps the cold air from the Palatinate Forest out. The estate's original parcel, covering more than two hectares, occupies the uppermost section of the site; its south-southeast-facing slope reaches gradients of up to 35 percent and, at 280 to 320 metres above sea level, is the highest-altitude Grand Cru vineyard in the Palatinate. The subsoil consists of Upper Rotliegend, formed 280 million years ago in the Permian period: loose deposits of angular granite, shale and melaphyre, coloured dark red by their high iron content and possessing excellent heat-retention capacity.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling, selectively hand-harvested in several passes and destemmed. The 24-hour skin contact was followed by gentle pressing, with clarification achieved through natural sedimentation of the must sediment, and fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After five months on full lees, racking took place in March 2023, followed by bottling in July 2023.

On the palate

Powerful, as on the nose, carried by a distinctly fresh acidity that provides a counterpoint to the spicy, earthy components. At 12.5% vol., the wine achieves plenty of power and expression. Complexity builds over several days after opening.

Food pairing suggestions

Grilled salmon on saffron linguine, peach tart with fresh cheese and pine nuts, or pumpkin stuffed with minced lamb and couscous.

Special features

The estate's entire holding in this site, more than four hectares, lies within the 20.8-hectare core area. Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz farm their 26 hectares in Siebeldingen biodynamically and vinify their wines fully fermented and bone-dry, with their twin sons Hans and Valentin working alongside them. Drunk young, this Riesling calls for early opening and decanting.
