About this wine
Character
A cool Riesling that nevertheless has nothing closed about it. The nose leads with spice and stone, followed by blond tobacco, ripe lemons, blood oranges and grapefruit with pith, along with a slightly grapey, extract-rich touch and herbs: thyme, nettle, calendula.
Terroir and origin
West of Birkweiler, the Kastanienbusch lies at the edge of a natural basin, sheltered from the cool winds coming off the Palatinate Forest. At 320 metres above sea level, it is the highest GG site in the Pfalz, with a slope gradient of 30 to 35 percent. The soil consists of loose deposits of granite, slate and melaphyre over the iron-rich Upper Rotliegend. Rebholz's parcels belong to the site's original plot.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. After destemming, the grapes underwent roughly 24 hours of skin contact; following settling and natural sedimentation, fermentation took place in stainless steel, followed by six months of ageing on the fine lees. 12.5% ABV, dry.
On the palate
Juicy, almost easy-drinking and open, with white-fleshed fruit and citrus notes. The acid structure is typical of 2023: generous and taut at once. Towards the finish the wine grows ever firmer, showing light extract grip and an abundant minerality and salinity.
Distinctive features
Ökonomierat Rebholz's sites are farmed biodynamically. The Kastanienbusch Riesling GG received 100 points from Gault&Millau for the 2017 vintage. Here in a 1500 ml magnum.
