About this wine

Character

This Pinot Noir works through structure rather than sheer volume. At 13.0% ABV it stays lean, the tannin is firm yet ripe, and the acidity keeps the dark fruit alert right through the finish. Vinified bone-dry, with no sweetness to smooth things over: Pinot Noir in the estate's characteristically linear style.

Terroir and origin

Im Sonnenschein is a monopole vineyard, owned solely by the Ökonomierat Rebholz estate in Siebeldingen and ranking among its top VDP sites. At the edge of the Palatinate Forest, the family farms a mosaic of four geological formations: rotliegend, red sandstone, shale and shell limestone. Farming is biodynamic, and there is no manipulation in the cellar.

Grape variety and vinification

Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir. Rebholz treats it with the same approach as the estate's Rieslings: fully fermented, bone-dry, without cosmetic intervention. What the site delivered in the 2019 vintage shows unfiltered in the glass.

On the palate

The wine opens with black cherry and blackberry, followed by herbal spice and undergrowth. On the palate, dark cherry and plum ride firm tannin, the acidity staying lively. The finish is long, spicy and slightly earthy.

Food recommendations

A classic match for saddle of venison and game terrine, as well as duck breast with red berries or rack of lamb. For something more rustic, try porcini risotto or chanterelles on toasted bread. Aged Comté also finds its place here.

Special features

Year after year, this monopole vineyard yields Grosses Gewächse of crystalline precision. Behind the wine stands a family whose natural-wine philosophy began in 1889 with great-grandfather Eduard and is continued today by Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz together with twin sons Hans and Valentin.
