About this wine

Character

A bone-dry Grosses Gewächs of medium straw yellow, austere and tonic on the palate. The nose shows apple peel, grapefruit zest and ripe lemon, joined by nutty notes, mirabelle plum and a touch of mango, underscored by plenty of crushed limestone, oyster shell and iodine.

Terroir and origin

The Im Sonnenschein vineyard lies in the Siebeldingen Queich valley, on the edge of the Haardt, at the transition from the Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest. While most vineyards in the area face east, this one is south-facing. The vines grow at 160 to 250 metres on slopes of 5 to 20 percent, on Triassic shell limestone — one of the estate's four soil types, the one responsible for the fine acid structure.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. After destemming, the must underwent 24 hours of skin contact, followed by settling and natural sedimentation. Fermentation took place in stainless steel, after which the wine rested for six months on fine lees. 12.5% vol., made in a dry style.

On the palate

Good acid drive and plenty of energy. The wine is initially austere and saline; the shell limestone lends power and minerality with fine creaminess, while the acidity cuts crystal-clear through the pale fruit. Juicy, yet tobacco-like, herbal and phenolic, with chalky coolness and a lively mineral edge.

Distinctive features

Im Sonnenschein is a monopole vineyard of the Rebholz family, who farm 26 hectares biodynamically in Siebeldingen and vinify their wines to full dryness. What began in 1889 with great-grandfather Eduard is carried on today by Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz together with their twin sons Hans and Valentin.
