About this wine
Character
A Grosses Gewächs Pinot Blanc that reveals density and concentration on the nose while remaining cool and precise. Bone-dry, 14.0% vol., with very good ageing potential.
Terroir and origin
The Mandelberg vineyard lies south-west of Birkweiler on a ridge running from the Hohenberg via the Rauhberg eastward into the Rhine plain. The best parcels are east-facing slopes up to 250 metres high with a gradient of 10 to 30 percent. The vines are rooted in Triassic shell limestone, over 200 million years old: beige-grey, angular limestone rocks bearing fossils of marine animals and plants, topped by deep, loamy soil.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Blanc, selectively hand-harvested in several passes and processed solely by gravity. The destemmed must macerates for 24 hours to draw aroma and minerality from the berry skins, followed by ageing in stainless steel tanks with extended lees contact. No chaptalisation, no fining, no sweetening, bottled late and gently. The Rebholz family's vineyards are farmed biodynamically.
On the palate
The palate opens fresh and saline, underpinned by the juicy fruit already found on the nose: ripe pear, vineyard peach, orange and a touch of mango, alongside herbal notes and chalky, smoky nuances. Fine tannin carries the long finish, with citrus and subtle bitter notes providing the final touch.
Food pairing
Pairs with celeriac ravioli with tarragon and vin jaune sauce, poularde baked in a lemon salt crust with glazed pak choi, or pork cheek with pearl barley risotto, lardo and black walnut.
Special features
Pale, sparkling golden yellow in the glass with delicate green highlights. Those wanting to drink the 2022 at this youthful stage should open it early and decant it.
