About this wine

Character

A Grosses Gewächs made from Pinot Blanc that openly shows its ripe fruit while remaining precisely drawn. Creamy in impression, refined in style: ripe stone fruit and subtly tropical notes meet citrus accents, herbs and stone.

Terroir and origin

The Mandelberg lies south-west of Birkweiler in the Palatinate, around 500 metres from the Kastanienbusch. The parcels for this wine sit at roughly 250 metres above sea level and face south-east. The rise runs from the Hohenberg to the Rauhberg and is a fault line of the Rhine Rift Valley: Rotliegend from the Permian, along with Bunter sandstone, shell limestone and Keuper from the Triassic. The Pinot Blanc grows mainly on the shell limestone, which is veined with clay and gives the wine its substance.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Blanc. After slow pressing, the must ferments spontaneously, and the wine is aged in stainless steel. Oak is avoided entirely so that none of the variety's complexity is lost. The Rebholz family farms the vines in Siebeldingen biodynamically.

On the palate

Juicy and full in the mouth, with pure, ripe fruit: stone fruit, pome fruit, a touch of papaya and lemon, plus lemon curd. The extract sweetness carries a silky texture, while crisp acidity provides tension and the minerality lends vibrancy. Salt and grip remain on the finish.

Special features

The wine is fermented bone-dry and reaches the glass with no oak influence at all, built entirely on the shell limestone of the Mandelberg.
