About this wine

Character

A Barbaresco that starts quietly and then lingers. The nose moves from dried flowers and herbs to black cherry, earth and forest floor, followed by liquorice, fermented cardamom, black tea, dry undergrowth and dark tobacco. Everything finely woven, not expressive yet penetrating. Transparent ruby red in the glass.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in Starderi, the northernmost commune of Neive, on a small plot with 40-year-old vines. Olek Bondonio was able to lease it from an elderly couple who could no longer work the steep slopes. The soils here are softer and more clay-rich, less marly, and the site is less exposed. Bondonio farms seven hectares according to biodynamic principles, with no website and no tasting room.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Nebbiolo. Fermentation took place in concrete, two months on the skins with a submerged cap, followed by gentle basket pressing and at least two years of ageing in large casks. Bottled unfiltered and unfined, with around 40 mg total sulphur. 14.0% ABV, dry.

On the palate

Juicy and silky, with fine tannins and a crystal-clear, bright acidity. The fruit stays dark and red berried, partly dried, structure and concentration are harmonious, presence and balance excellent. The wine is as transparent as its colour suggests, comes across as classic rather than modern, and is already drinkable despite its youth.

Special features

Bottled in Magnum, 1500 ml. Bondonio's great-great-great-grandfather was among the co-founders of the Produttori del Barbaresco in 1894, and the family estate is over 200 years old. Only limited quantities come from seven hectares, making the wines correspondingly rare.
