About this wine
Character
A balanced, straightforward red wine at 12.5% ABV, velvety at its core and held upright by a lively nerve of acidity. It initially appears reserved and requires air, time, and a large glass.
Terroir and Origin
Gols on Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. Gernot and Heike Heinrich started with two hectares in 1990 and today cultivate one hundred hectares completely biodynamically: cool limestone slopes on the Leithaberg, gravel and red slate on the Parndorfer Platte. They often purchased the steep, stony parcels that others abandoned.
Grape Variety and Vinification
A dry-fermented cuvée of 55% Zweigelt and 45% Blaufränkisch. In the cellar, gravity replaces pumps. Ageing takes place in large wooden casks made by local cooper Klaus Pauscha, using used wood that allows the wine to breathe rather than perfuming it; for the Pannobile, wood remains essential.
On the Palate
On the nose, red-berry fruit in the guise of a Black Forest cake, floral and propelled by dark fruit. On the palate, crisp, fresh fruit unfolds in layers, framed by a delicately woven tannic structure. The velvety softness gains momentum from acidity and a whisper of stimulating bitterness, while the finish remains packed with tension. After years in the cellar, tobacco and dark cherries emerge.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with braised pork belly with potato flan and fruity red cabbage salad, stuffed roast chicken with chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and grilled kohlrabi, or a Mediterranean grilled vegetable quiche with Gorgonzola and walnut.
Special Features
The Heinrichs have been farming biodynamically since 2006, achieved Demeter certification in 2017, and co-founded respekt-BIODYN in 2009. The recommended drinking window begins in 2022; the 1500 ml magnum matures at a slower pace.
