About this wine

Character

The Riesling Doosberg Grosses Gewächs 2021 from Peter Jakob Kühn is a dry Rheingau Riesling that holds its power in reserve rather than putting it on display. The nose stays understated while feeling deep and coherent: herbal spice and a touch of tobacco at first, joined by citrus notes, blossom, greengage plum and a hint of fresh sea breeze. In the glass, a medium straw yellow.

Terroir and origin

The Doosberg lies at around 120 metres above sea level in Oestrich, with soil shaped by loess and loam. These rich soils lend the wine power and tension. The eastern part of the site faces south, while some areas remain cool. The estate in Oestrich-Winkel is run by Peter Bernhard and Viktoria in the twelfth generation, with almost exclusively Riesling grown across 21 hectares.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling. In the cellar, restraint is the rule: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal use of sulphur. The wine was matured in classic large oak casks for around two years, first one year on full lees, then six months on fine lees, followed by bottle ageing. 12.0% vol.

On the palate

Bright, lean and refined at first. Over time, its inner strength, tension and extract come through: the wine pushes forward while remaining buoyant and sensual, with great length and very drinkability. Serving temperature 12 °C.

Food pairings

Sardine fillets marinated in miso, lemon, star anise and juniper, Goa curry with sweetcorn, beans and pumpkin, and pea and carrot ragout with roasted bacon.

Special features

The vines are farmed according to Demeter guidelines, and the Demeter logo appears on the label. The estate has held the certification since 2009.
