About this wine
Character
A precise, dry Riesling from the Rheingau, deep and energetic, with plenty of juice and impressive length. The nose opens citrusy and fresh, joined by smoke and tobacco, topped with crushed slate and white blossom. Medium straw yellow in the glass.
Terroir and origin
The plot in the Hallgartener Jungfer sits at around 220 metres above sea level above the Doosberg, gently sloped to the southeast and cool. The soil is erosion material from the Rheingau massif with a high quartzite content, mixed with loess loam.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling. Ageing takes place in a Stockinger oak cask acquired specifically for this purpose; since the wine from the Jungfer rests in the same cask year after year, the influence of the wood is now barely noticeable. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous, without fining and with minimal sulphur additions. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
Deep, juicy and energetic, with notes of stone and salt, lemon zest and fruit as well as stone fruit. The texture feels creamy and silky, extract and acid structure remain taut and firm.
Food pairings
With grilled John Dory in a broth of yellow tomatoes, ginger and fermented garlic, with skewers of scallops fermented in lemon shiro koji, or with tandoori cauliflower with ginger and shiro miso.
Distinctive features
The estate in Oestrich-Winkel dates back to its founding in 1786 and is run by Peter Bernhard and Viktoria Kühn in the twelfth generation. Almost exclusively Riesling grows on 21 hectares, Demeter-certified since 2009. Bottled in the 1500 ml magnum.
