About this wine

Character

The Riesling Jungfer Grosses Gewächs 2021 is a dry Rheingau Riesling from the Hallgartener Jungfer, built on tension rather than power. Medium straw yellow in the glass. The nose opens with citrus notes, joined by smoke and tobacco, layered with crushed slate and white blossom.

Terroir and origin

The estate's share of the Hallgartener Jungfer lies above the Doosberg at around 220 metres above sea level. The soil consists of erosion material from the Rheingau mountains with a high quartzite content, mixed with loess loam. The gentle south-easterly slope keeps the vineyard cool.

Grape variety and vinification

Riesling, like almost everything on the estate's 21 hectares, which are farmed according to Demeter biodynamic principles. In the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal use of sulphur. The wine is aged in a specially acquired Stockinger oak cask; because the wine from this site rests in the very same cask every year, the oak is barely noticeable. 12.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

Deep, juicy and energetic, with stone and salt, lemon zest and fruit as well as stone fruit. The texture is creamy and silky, held taut and firm by extract and acid structure. A precise wine, full of juice, with an impressive length.

Food recommendations

With grilled John Dory in a broth of yellow tomatoes, ginger and fermented garlic, with skewers of scallops fermented in lemon shiro koji and with tandoori cauliflower with ginger and shiro miso.

Special features

The estate was founded in 1786 by Jacobus Kühn in Oestrich-Winkel and is today run in its twelfth generation by Peter Bernhard and Viktoria. It has carried the Demeter seal, whose logo appears on the label, since 2009.
