About this wine
Character
The Riesling Jungfer Grosses Gewächs 2022 is a dry single-vineyard Riesling from the Rheingau that combines light, weightless notes with more earthy ones. It is fragrant with blossom, smoke and earth, must apple, hay, a touch of fennel and aniseed, almonds and peaches with a hint of crushed slate.
Terroir and origin
The estate's parcel in the Hallgartener Jungfer lies at around 220 metres above sea level. The soil is erosion material from the Rheingau mountains with a high quartzite content, mixed with loess loam. The slight south-easterly slope keeps the vineyard cool.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling. Peter Bernhard and Viktoria Kühn run the estate founded in 1786 by Jacobus Kühn in Oestrich-Winkel in its twelfth generation, farming the 21 hectares biodynamically, Demeter-certified since 2009. Restraint governs the cellar work: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal use of sulphur. Ageing took place in the specially acquired Stockinger oak cask, in which the wine from the Jungfer rests every year, meaning the influence of the wood is barely perceptible anymore.
On the palate
Medium straw yellow in the glass. On the palate the wine feels pure and weightless, everything flows, delicate and supple, airy yet full of energy. It mediates between a lime-lemon note with fine sweetness and salt and stone, with a long finish.
