About this wine
Character
The Riesling Landgeflecht PJK.Unikat 2021 by Peter Jakob Kühn is a dry Rheingau wine at 12.0% ABV from a monopole parcel in Oestrich-Winkel. It comes across as airy and complex at once, a suspended intensity: calm in appearance while its minerality vibrates and its energy pulses.
Terroir and origin
The Landgeflecht parcel lies in the lower part of the Doosberg and was planted in 1978. Loess and clay soils over quartzite define it. The site is a monopole of the Kühn family, who first produced their own wine here in 2006. The estate's 21 hectares are farmed according to Demeter biodynamic principles, a certification the estate has held since 2009.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling, hand-harvested. The whole clusters were pressed over several hours, and the must fermented spontaneously. This was followed by 24 months on full lees in a traditional 1,200-litre large oak cask, without intervention in the must's natural composition, and further ageing in bottle afterwards.
On the palate
The colour ranges between intense straw yellow and pale golden yellow. On the nose, smoke and herbs, tobacco and cubeb pepper, alongside mirabelle and peach, must apple and quince. Bright, floral and light fruity notes meet the dark smokiness lent by the quartzite soils. A fine phenolic grip, silky texture, very long finish.
Special features
Monopole site, vines planted in 1978, two years on full lees in large oak cask: three decisions that make this wine one of a kind. In the cellar, the estate's restraint shows in spontaneous fermentation, no fining and minimal use of sulphur.
