About this wine
Character
The Sankt Nikolaus 2022 draws its life from two poles. One leans slightly reductive, with smoke and stone, the other slightly oxidative, with mellow apple, apple skins, hops and yeast. In between lie lemon oil, blond tobacco, patisserie, herbs and apricot.
Terroir and origin
The site lies in Mittelheim directly on the Rhine, by the ferry to Ingelheim, with a gentle south-facing slope. The soil is dominated by calcareous, sandy loess, partly interspersed with terrace sediments and rocks of the Alzey formation, a marine sand. This is where the estate's oldest vines stand, up to 65 years old.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling, farmed according to Demeter biodynamic principles. After hand harvesting, the whole clusters were pressed over several hours and the must fermented spontaneously, without altering the natural composition of the musts. This was followed by 16 months on full lees in traditional large oak cask and double cask of 1,200 and 2,400 litres.
On the palate
Airy and weightlessly light — that is one side. The other is grounded, bringing stoniness and power. The wine remains juicy and saline, savoury and vivacious, with deep energy, a taut yet charming acidity and a mouth-watering salinity in the finish.
Special features
The estate in Oestrich-Winkel is run in its twelfth generation by Peter Bernhard and Viktoria and farms 21 hectares; it has carried the Demeter seal since 2009, whose logo also appears on this label. In the cellar, restraint is the rule: spontaneous fermentation, no fining, minimal sulphur use. 11.5% ABV, bottled in 1500 ml Magnum.
