About this wine
Character
This Riesling thrives on two poles. One is slightly reductive, with smoke and stone, the other slightly oxidative, with mellow apple, apple skin, hops and yeast. In between lie lemon oil, blond tobacco, pastry, herbs and apricot. In the glass it sits between intense straw yellow and pale golden yellow.
Terroir and origin
The Sankt Nikolaus site lies in Mittelheim right on the Rhine, by the ferry crossing to Ingelheim, sloping gently towards the south. The soil is dominated by calcareous, sandy loess, in places interspersed with terrace sediments and rock from the Alzey Formation, i.e. marine sand.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Riesling from vines up to 65 years old, the oldest at the estate. After hand-harvesting, the whole clusters were pressed over several hours and the must fermented spontaneously. Ageing lasted 16 months on full lees in traditional large oak casks and double casks (1,200 l and 2,400 l), without altering the natural composition of the musts. 11.5% ABV, dry.
On the palate
Airy and buoyantly light, yet grounded, with a certain stoniness and power. Juicy, saline, piquant and lively, carried by a taut yet charming acidity. The finish remains mouthwateringly saline.
Special features
The Peter Jakob Kühn estate in Oestrich-Winkel is run by the twelfth generation, Peter Bernhard and Viktoria. The 21 hectares are farmed according to Demeter biodynamic principles, certified since 2009, with the Demeter logo on the label. In the cellar, restraint prevails: no fining, minimal use of sulphur.
