About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir that floats out of the glass: ethereal, mystical, and deliberately kept slender at 12.5% ABV. The Freyheit range is Gernot Heinrich's playground, and this red demonstrates its potential – fragrance and motion instead of weight.

Terroir and Origin

The vines are rooted in Burgenland on mica schist and limestone, farmed biodynamically. Since 1990, Gernot and Heike Heinrich have expanded their winery in Gols from two to one hundred hectares, parcel by parcel, often acquiring the steep and stony sites that others abandoned.

Grape Variety and Vinification

100% Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). Hand-harvested in early September, spontaneous fermentation with 70% whole clusters on the skins. Subsequently aged for over a year on the natural lees in amphorae. The clay allows micro-oxygenation without contributing wood aromas, bringing the origin transparently into the glass.

On the Palate

On the nose, bright berries and sweet cherries, alongside wild herbs: mint, boxwood, bell pepper, ivy, and subtle forest floor. Clearly discernible spice notes of allspice, juniper, cinnamon, and a hint of frankincense. On the palate, it unfurls with refreshing acidity, delicate fruit sweetness, and a polished tannin structure, vibrant and dancing. The colour: translucent light red.

Special Features

Demeter-certified since 2017, the winery is a founding member of respekt-BIODYN. In the cellar, work is carried out using gravity rather than pumps; for wines like this, clay amphorae increasingly replace small oak barrels.
