About this wine

Character

A Chardonnay with an austere, lightly smoky edge: the citrus fruit stays green-yellow and clear, and the reductive note never pushes to the fore. Purity and tension take precedence over sheer richness here.

Terroir and origin

The climat En Carementrant lies within the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation below the Roche de Vergisson, at 280 metres in a pure south-facing position. The soil is very clay- and limestone-rich, dating to the Bajocian of the Jura. Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret source the fruit here from 0.4 hectares; the vineyard is in its final year of conversion to organic farming.

Grape variety and vinification

Chardonnay from vines aged 50 to 60 years, hand-picked on 29 August 2022. This is followed by whole-cluster pressing, spontaneous fermentation and 17 months of ageing in used tanks and foudres, with malolactic fermentation running to completion. The wine was neither fined nor filtered; total sulphur sits at around 15 mg/l depending on the cask, with a pH of 3.37.

On the palate

Pure and driven, again with a slightly reductive smokiness. Alongside this come green-yellow citrus fruit, herbs, crushed chalk, salt, a touch of white pepper and citrus zest. The acidity holds the tension, while a light creaminess softens it.

Food pairings

This wine pairs well with fougasse with green olives, lemon, Gruyère and za'atar, scallop risotto and linguine with Meyer lemon, dill and garlic.

Highlights

Following 2019, this is the third wine from this climat, preceded by a four-year gap during which the grape supplier changed. The Bret Brothers brand was founded in 2001 as a négociant project by the two brothers, who work exclusively with partners farming organically or biodynamically. 12.5% vol., dry.
