About this wine

Character

A pale, lively red wine that makes no secret of its joy. On the nose, bursting red fruit: cherry in many guises, flanked by blackberry, wild berries, red berry compote and a touch of sweet ice lolly. Effervescent on the surface, while underneath lie a sublime depth and a darker facet.

Terroir and origin

The grapes grow in the Vincenzo Vineyard in the Contrada Tartaraci in Bronte, named after Salvo Foti's grandfather Vincenzo. The site sits at 1010 metres above sea level, facing northwest, on Etna's black soils of cooled lava, volcanic ash and sand. The vines average 100 years of age and are trained as bushes: Alberello Etneo, declared a UNESCO World Heritage practice, each vine tended by hand and supported only by chestnut stakes from Etna, with no wire or concrete posts.

Grape variety and vinification

100% Grenache, hand-harvested. The grapes ferment for about a week semi-carbonically in old, open tonneaux, then are pressed and reunited with the wine. About six months of ageing in steel tank follow, with a coarse filtration before bottling. Spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and neutral ageing vessels are part of the estate's cellar practice, as Salvo Foti rejects chemical intervention.

On the palate

Very juicy fruit framed by silky tannin that gives the wine its contour. The delicate acidity pulses quietly in the background, carrying it into a cherry-red, finely fruited finish. Dry, 13.0% ABV.

Distinctive features

A high-altitude Grenache from the dark side of Etna: century-old bush vines, fermentation in old tonneaux, ageing without new oak. Transparency in the glass and seriousness on the palate, both at once.
