About this wine

Character

A dry Muskateller from Southern Styria boasting a far-reaching bouquet while remaining cool and taut on the palate. Rose, nutmeg, and hops set the tone, underscored by a saline, stony streak. Complex and wonderfully invigorating at once.

Terroir and Origin

Ried Marein is situated on a hilltop in Eichberg, one of the Ortswein (village) appellations of Südsteiermark DAC. The steep, south-facing slope lies at 500 metres above sea level, embraced by woodlands that provide cooling breezes. The vines are rooted in calcareous quartz and gravelly scree.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Muskateller sourced from roughly 30-year-old vines. A portion of the fruit received extended skin contact, which is clearly reflected in the texture. Spontaneously fermented in stainless steel, where the wine also matured without any wood contact. Dry, with 1.1 g/l residual sugar and 5 g/l acidity, 12.0% ABV.

On the Palate

Medium straw yellow in the glass. The nose leads from elderflower and cassis to mandarin, limequat, and preserved lemon, complemented by lanolin, sage, and coriander seed. Crystalline and precise, tightly woven, with delicate grip and a refined texture; spice and fruit rest effortlessly on a cool, stony base rich in minerality and salinity.

Special Features

Sattlerhof in Gamlitz is run by Willi and Andrea Sattler. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand, with the family intervening as little as possible in the cellar. The family estate is certified organic (AT-BIO-402).
