About this wine
Character
The Alten Reben Welschriesling DAC 2023 is a dry white wine from Southern Styria, harvested from Sattlerhof's oldest vines. Medium straw yellow in the glass, creamy and elegant on the nose: wool wax, quince, yellow apple, and pear appear alongside touches of patisserie, flint, and subtle smoke, backed by hay flowers and white blossoms.
Terroir and Origin
The vines are rooted at 250 to 450 metres in quartz and mica, quartz sands, and limestone gravel. The vineyard plunges with an incline of up to 80 percent, demanding that every single step of the work be done by hand. Willi and Andrea Sattler have been cultivating their vineyards around Gamlitz since the 1980s.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Single-varietal Welschriesling from 60-year-old vines. Following an extended skin contact time, the must ferments spontaneously before the wine matures in 300-litre barrels. The cellar reflects a philosophy of minimal intervention: hand-selected grapes, gentle pressing. 12.5% ABV.
On the Palate
Deep and sensual. Ripe pear and dark white-fleshed fruit meet cream and a distinct oak note, along with salt and a hint of pepper. A lively kick of acidity keeps the structure vibrant, while a fine tannic grip provides support. Silky texture, outstanding length.
Special Features
Südsteiermark DAC, certified organic under the control code AT-BIO-402. Vine age, steep gradient, and maturation in small oak barrels transform an often underestimated grape variety into a wine of complexity and ambition.
