About this wine
Character
A taut, distinctive Chardonnay from Southern Styria, shaped by its high altitude. The bouquet is delicate and elegant: stewed yellow plums, orange, caramelised apples and quince, followed by crisp fresh pome fruit, apple skin, a touch of crushed rock, alongside creamy notes and almond pastry. Bright straw yellow in the glass.
Terroir and Origin
Kapellenweingarten is Sattlerhof's highest-elevation single vineyard (Ried), perched at 600 metres above the slopes of Gamlitz. On gradients ranging from 20 to 70 percent, the vines are rooted in a mix of calcareous quartz and silica gravel. The cool, airy microclimate delays ripening, leading to a late harvest.
Grape Variety and Vinification
100% Morillon, as Chardonnay is traditionally known in Styria, sourced from roughly 35-year-old vines. The grapes were hand-selected and spontaneously fermented in large, neutral oak casks, where the wine matured for two years. With 1.1 g/l residual sugar and 6.1 g/l acidity, it is bone dry. In the cellar, Willi and Andrea Sattler pursue a minimal-intervention approach.
On the Palate
The triad of fresh apple, lightly caramelised apple and apple skin continues, with the skin texture and a grippy mouthfeel coming to the fore. Substance and juiciness carry a bright abundance of fruit, the acidity remains clear and vibrant, complemented by subtly nutty tones and a saline drive.
Special Features
Two years in large oak casks without new oak flavours, combined with the cool ripening at 600 metres: the result is a Südsteiermark DAC marked by pure structure rather than oak influence. Certified organic under AT-BIO-402.
